cruses nice at high way speeds with lower rpms. may have a tr4 motor and has 4 speed full synchronized trans. not matching numbers, there is pictures of engine block #, commission # and body tags for you to look up. is tagged and insure, runs drives and has brakes. Fortunately, after everything cooled down the insulation re-solidified around the wires and all was as good as new.1960 tr3, has been titled as 1961 since new.

Further investigation revealed that someone had tried to hotwire the car, resulting in a short that melted the plastic insulation. Fortunately I was able to take the last San Francisco exit, turn off the engine and coast to a stop. My efforts, however, were significantly hastened by the arrival of a carload of young men who pulled up, rolled down the windows, popped a few tops from some cold beers and started watching my travails for their Friday night "cocktail hour." I think I changed that tire in record time, and I'm surprised the lug nuts didn't fall off on the way home.Īnother time I was on the approach to the Bay Bridge when I noticed smoke spewing out from under the dash. I pulled out the jack and began to mount the spare. Once, while working in a seedy part of town, I returned to my car to find the left rear tire miserably flat and the sun slowly sinking in the sky. Unfortunately, during inclement weather this meant I had to avoid driving over any puddles, otherwise I faced a showering spray of muddy water, especially drenching at higher speeds. After 20 years' of water exposure the floorboard under the driver's seat had rusted out, resulting in a sizeable hole through which I could view the passing road top. Fall and winter, however, were a bit more challenging. Spring and summer were the most fun, with the top down and Pavarotti on the cassette. Upon completing graduate school I began a job that required a lot of travel, so for my birthday my clairvoyant spouse outfitted the Triumph with a tape deck, and our cruising adventures began.

So in 1979 I drove home one Friday evening with my shining white '61 Triumph 3A and a very large smile. Soon after, I found my specimen - a car that had never been wrecked by its two previous middle-aged owners. Initially I wanted one that was English Racing Green, but after test-driving a few, I realized that the color of the vehicle was the least important characteristic - but maintenance and past history were crucial.
